Movie review – Movies in brief

To the Power of Anne

To the Power of Anne might just be the worst film of the year, if not the decade.

In it Anne Power, who was a familiar blonde celeb from the 1980s, attempts her comeback – and she takes her son, Ryan Flynn, down with her.

The film is a face-clutcher (it’s so bad you can’t help clutching your face in despair).

What were they thinking?

How did this get a theatrical release?

Why did the likes of Des and Dawn Lindberg (who were the only laugh in 90 minutes), Louise Saint Claire, Timothy Moloi and Terence Bridget do it?

Why, oh why, hasn’t the scriptwriter been hung, drawn and quartered? Billed as a mockumentary, unsuspecting viewers are tortured with scenes such as Power not having enough money to buy groceries and being botoxed.

The finale is an incomprehensible house party, and then there are the musical interludes of Power singing covers like If You Go.

Well, don’t go, then you won’t need to take up heavy drinking to forget this powerless film. 3/10

Identity Thief

This movie is about an overweight sociopath with a bad dye job, terrible taste in clothes and a penchant for stealing identities to support her shopaholic life. Melissa McCarthy is Diana.

Enter Jason Bateman as Sandy Patterson, a good family man with a solid job, two kids and a third on the way.

But his steady life trajectory is about to be rocked by Diana, who is impersonating him to steal his money.

McCarthy is a good comedienne, so why does she think it is okay to allow film makers to play the oldest card in the sexist playbook: all a girl needs to feel better about herself is a makeover and some male attention. 5/10

Warm Bodies

Warm Bodies is about R (Nicholas Hoult), a very unusual zombie who can’t quite remember the rest of his name who saves a human girl (Teresa Palmer) from harm instead of eating her brain.

This unzombie-like action changes the world.

Writer Isaac Marion self-published this zombie romance in 2010 and garnered rave reviews for a pure genius genre mashup.

The director does it justice and this flick does for zombies what Twilight did for vampires. 7/10

The Impossible

This movie begins on the morning of December 26 2004, when the lives of hundreds of thousands of souls were sacrificed to Mother Nature.

The film shows one Spanish family’s incredible, improbable survival of the tsunami.

The film’s greatest strength is that it gives the audience a sense of what it must have been like to stand beside the pool one morning in an island paradise with palm trees and pina coladas and to watch as a wall of water comes to wash you away.

There are no bad guys, just an awesome show of destruction and the resilience of the human spirit. 8/10

Oz The Great and Powerful

Director Sam Raimi uses the universe of Oz, as created by L Frank Baum to imagine Oz before the wizard, and how Oz came to be Oz the Great and Powerful.

Oz (James Franco) is a con man and a womaniser who puts on magic shows for a pittance but then finds himself in a magical place at the centre of a love triangle of his own making with three witches. The special effects are spectacular, and Oz pops with colour and wonder throughout.

It is a great pleasure to go back over the rainbow for a couple of hours and marvel at the magic that film makers can weave. 7/10
