Movie review – Still far from ice cold

Forget the professional critics and their highly technical reviews. If you want to know if an animated film is good or bad, take the kids to watch it.

That’s what I did at the preview of the fourth instalment of Ice Age, where my seven-year-old daughter was the critic.

Judging by the way she cackled, squirmed and talked back to the screen, I’d say Manny the Mammoth and company are right on the money.

Manny, Diego and Sid – along with Granny – are separated from the herd after an earthquake.

While trying to find their way back, they encounter the self-styled king of the sea, Captain Gutt, and his mayhem-causing pirate crew.

When Manny, Diego and Sid steal his ship to get to the herd before the shifting earth pushes them out to sea, they make a mortal enemy of him.

Meanwhile, Ellie has her hands full with Peaches going through an awkward phase – not to mention keeping the herd optimistic on the long trek.

The film is in 3D so the fight scenes had the children in the audience ducking flying chunks of ice and various weapons.

But from the many squeals of excitement, the Ice Age franchise is still hot.
