Movie review – Visit Paris for the price of a movie ticket

2011-12-23 12:55

Film: Midnight in Paris (UIP)
Director: Woody Allen
Featuring: Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams, Adrien Brody, Corey Stoll, Kathy Bates and Marion Cotillard
Rating: 8/10

This is one of those films the critics rave about, but which comes and goes with little fanfare from regular folks.

It’s a pity because Woody Allen outdoes himself – no mean feat for a man with his CV – with this wonderfully wrought piece of whimsy.

Set in modern-day Paris, Allen does for the City of Lights what he did for Barcelona in Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

He makes you want to board a plane as quickly as possible to order a coffee at a pavement cafe while choosing a Montmartre bistro for a late-night dinner – all while falling in love with some impossibly perfect somebody.

Allen’s protagonist is Gil, played with surprising depth by comedy lightweight Owen Wilson.

He is a frustrated novelist on holiday in Paris with his rather shallow fiancée, Inez, whom Rachel McAdams creates as shrill and bereft of imagination.

While Inez is making cow eyes at a pseudo-intellectual friend, Paul (Michael Sheen), who simply must be right even when he’s wrong, Gil is drawn into another world completely.

He finds a portal to 1920s Paris and steps into a bar where the author F Scott Fitzgerald and his wife are dancing to a tune played by Cole Porter on the piano.

If you are an Allen fan, don’t miss Midnight in Paris. Allen’s pen makes love to Paris in the way his early films made love to New York City.

This is the ideal guilty pleasure for those on holiday who have a spare hour or two in the day to spend in the cinema. Smuggle in a good coffee and a pastry, and go to Paris for the price of a movie ticket.
