Movies – Family fun with Pooh

2011-05-13 15:02

Film: Winnie the Pooh (Ster-Kinekor)
Directors: Stephen J Anderson and Don Hall
Featuring: John Cleese, Jim Cummings, Tom Kenny, Craig Ferguson and Bud Luckey
Rating: 8/10

AA Milne’s evergreen creation, Winnie the Pooh, has enchanted generations of children since the first book of stories featuring the creatures of the Hundred Acre Wood was published in 1926. The second book of stories was published two years later and the rest has become Disney history.

The honey-coloured bear “of very little brains” returns to the big screen in Winnie the Pooh, along with his collection of friends who all owe their richly imaginative lives to Christopher Robin.

The film is based on five stories that have not been adapted before.

The whole family will enjoy the movie’s animation rarity – it’s created using hand-drawn images. Capturing all the bucolic wonders of Christopher Robin’s childhood in the woods, it is also very funny. And it includes plenty of sage advice from the eponymous character – like “it’s good to face your fears, particularly when you’ve been hiding from them for a while” and “sometimes you have to rethink the things you thought you thought through”. Who can argue with that logic?

The film features the talents of a selection of veteran voice artists, led by Jim Cummings, who has voiced Pooh and mucker Tigger for many years on TV, film and video. The only change in the sound of the cast is Christopher Robin, who trades in his posh tones for a bit of a brogue.

This is the first film since 1977’s The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh to be based on Milne’s original stories. Pooh’s Heffalump Movie, The Tigger Movie and Piglet’s Big Movie featured only the author’s characters.
