Moyo to defend himself on escape charge

2011-09-16 10:38

Bongani Moyo, wanted for a spate of armed robberies, will defend himself in court against a charge of escaping from custody.

Moyo told the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court yesterday that he would conduct his own defence against the charge. He declined to apply for bail.

His trial on the escape charge was postponed to September 22 to give the state time to provide Moyo with a docket so he could prepare his defence.

Moyo made headlines last month when he allegedly walked out of the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court while on crutches. He was not locked in a cell or wearing shackles at the time.

Moyo also faces a trial on various robbery charges.

Yesterday another court heard he and his three co-accused in this trial had abandoned their formal bail applications.

The three are Leon Ncube, Khumbalani Sibanda and Thabani Sibanda.

All four will appear on the robbery charges on October 25.
