MOZAMBIQUE’s Zambezi and Pungue basins are no longer on flash-flood

red alert after river levels dropped drastically, a cabinet spokesperson has

Alberto Nkutumula told reporters after the weekly cabinet meeting

that the government would activate an orange alert in the same basins, which are

located in the central parts of the country.

Flow from the Cahora Bassa hydro-electric dam on the Zambezi River

had dropped from 3 200m³ to 2700m³ an hour.

Nkutumula said 15 917 people were affected by the floods, which

caused the deaths of six people in the central provinces.

The flash floods destroyed 2 382 houses and washed away 975 fields

in the same region, said Nkutumula.
