Mozambique floods claim 10 lives

2012-01-23 12:14

Disaster relief officials say storms have forced tens of thousands of people from their homes and killed 10 in Mozambique.

Radio Mozambique today quoted the National Disasters Management Institute as saying the most recent flooding victim died yesterday in the southern town of Chokwe.

That brings the total toll to 10 since a tropical depression brought fierce rains and wind last week.

Storms have abated but Dulce Chilundo, director of the national emergency office, told the radio station that the government is feeding and housing more than 56 000 people whose homes and belongings were swept away.

The governor of Gaza, Raimundo Diomba, says several schools in his southern province were destroyed.

Elsewhere, flooding has made stretches of highway impassable.
