Durban couple Shauwn and Sbu Mpisane paid more than R5.6 million for the return of most of their cars, which were seized by the Asset Forfeiture Unit.

The cars were seized in January, after the Pietermaritzburg High Court granted a preservation order against the couple, the Mercury reported today.

According to the Mercury, in terms of the order, assets valued at R70 million could be restrained, pending the outcome of fraud and corruption charges against Shauwn Mpisane.

The couple had challenged the legality of the preservation order and judgment was awaited.

They reportedly contacted court-appointed curator Trevor White yesterday asking for their cars back.

“I told them they could have them back if they gave me the value of the cars, about R15 million in cash,” White was quoted as saying.

“They transferred R5.63 million and I authorised them to take six vehicles.”

The Mercury reported that the Mpisanes left behind cars worth R10 million, but told White they would deposit the cash soon.

The fraud and corruption charges against Shauwn Mpisane relate to allegations that she submitted false documents to the Construction Industry Development Board to boost her grading and get contracts from the public works department.

She allegedly did this via her company Zikhulise Cleaning, Maintenance and Transport.
