Mpuma reverend killed, burnt

2010-11-09 14:26

A 75-year-old reverend was murdered on his way to church in Kwaggafontein Village.

“Passers-by saw the body of the reverend lying in the open veld and called the police,” said police spokesperson Warrant Officer David Mahlangu.

“The reverend was apparently killed elsewhere along the way a few hours earlier before his body was burnt with petrol and dumped in the secluded spot,” Mahlangu said.

“But at this stage we do not know the real cause of his death. The motive for the attack is also not clear because his cellphone was found in his pocket.”

The reverend was identified only as Mr Sithole. He belongs to the Assemblies of God church.

Mahlangu said police found a 5-litre container with some petrol lying next to the body.

A murder docket was opened.

The death of Sithole, who was an albino, has raised concerns about the safety of albinos in the area.

Spokesperson for the Mpumalanga Albanism Society, Nomsa Mazibuko, said it would investigate whether hatred towards albinos had been displayed in the vicinity of the killing.

Mazibuko said Sithole was not the first albino to be killed in the area in the past several months.
