Mr Prez, take a real look at Mexico

2013-09-15 14:00

This week our president, Jacob Zuma, said Mexico was a country where the media inspired him. We beg to differ.

The following is a list of journalists who were killed or who disappeared in Mexico between April 2012 and July 2013.

It is one of the worst places on earth to be a journalist and the list of those who died over the past century is a tale of devastation.

We hope our colleagues rest in peace and pray that we never ever become like Mexico in terms of how we treat journalists.

The president made the call as part of his new campaign for positive news.

At City Press, we work hard to present a balanced view of our country because the media must, we agree, be a mirror of society.

We also see our work in the spheres of anti-corruption, promoting good governance and exposing rotten services as profoundly patriotic and good-news journalism. It is always better to know than not to know.
