Mthatha escapees still on the loose

2011-03-21 12:50

Seven armed men were still on the loose after escaping from Wellington prison in Mthatha, where they were awaiting trial for murder and armed robbery, Eastern Cape police said today.

“We have not managed to arrest anyone yet in our search operation,” Lieutenant Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela said.

The search was being hampered by dense forest surrounding the prison.

“We are not even sure if they are still in the forest.”

The men overpowered a policeman and took the prison warder’s keys last night. They escaped through a fence and then shot and injured a policeman in town.

The seven were named as Sakhumzi Mvoko, Sibusiso Jejana and Odwa Sithole, all aged 27, and Khaya Bulo (39), all from Mthatha; Bongani Daluka (33) from Mqanduli; Xolani Buthelezi (32) from Durban; and Yandisa Bila (30) of Ngqeleni.

They faced charges of robbery, car theft, escaping from custody and murder.?
