Mthatha police crack down on crime

2011-02-03 15:18

Nine people were arrested in Mthatha in the early hours of today for numerous crimes in the area, Eastern Cape police said.

Police were looking for “dangerous”, wanted people who were linked to crimes of murder, rape, house robbery, car hijacking and business robbery, Lieutenant-Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela said.

All nine, who were between the ages of 18 and 28, were positively linked to these crimes.

Three of the men were linked to a crime that took place in Mthatha last month when a 41-year-old woman and her 21-year-old daughter were raped while the husband was tied up and forced to watch, he said.

Two laptops, two cellphones, a car and a 9mm pistol with four rounds were recovered during the arrests.

The firearm was sent for ballistic testing.

“The arrest of these people will help us (police) to solve some cases that are still pending.

“Investigations are continuing since we haven’t recovered firearms that were used during the crimes,” Fatyela said.

He said Mthatha had a spate of murders, rapes and robberies during December and last month.
