Mthethwa orders Gupta investigation

2013-05-02 15:04

Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa has “instructed” national police commissioner General Riah Phiyega to investigate “if any police prescripts were violated” through assistance provided to guests of the Gupta wedding.

Mthethwa says, in a statement, he expects a preliminary report by the end of the day.

He says the following possible transgressions have been identified:

» “Possible transgressions and violations by SA Police Service (SAPS) officials in the deployment of SAPS resources, inter alia, vehicles to the event;

» “Possible abuse of SAPS blue lights, with unconfirmed reports indicating that some of the vehicles used in transporting guests, were not SAPS vehicles but private vehicles which were fitted with police blue lights; and

» “Possible moonlighting as police officers by certain private security individuals who were hired to provide security at the event.”

Mthethwa says, according to a briefing received from Phiyega, the SAPS believed the Gupta wedding fell within the provisions of the Safety at Sports and Recreational Events Act, because a number of high-level dignitaries would attend.
