Murder charge after bus crash

2011-10-06 11:09

A truck driver who crashed into a school bus in the Free State has been charged with nine counts of murder and 45 of attempted murder.

“He was charged yesterday and was supposed to appear in court, but had to be taken back to hospital,” said the police’s Sergeant Mmako Mophiring.

Five primary school children and four teachers died as a result of the crash outside Harrismith on Monday.

Another 45 people were injured in the crash.

The truck driver (28) did not have a driver’s licence and did not have the owners’ permission to drive the truck, said Mophiring.

The man was still recovering from his injuries, but would appear in court as soon as possible.

Mourners packed the Leondale community centre, in the East Rand, today at a memorial service for those killed.

The memorial was attended by the Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga, Gauteng education MEC Barbara Creecy and Ekurhuleni mayor Mondli Gungubele.
