Music – Bi-on-ic uproar

2010-06-25 11:11

Animosity, name-calling and verbal cat-fighting have greeted pop star Christina Aguilera’s fourth studio album, Bi-on-ic (Sony Music). After a notable absence from the music industry and flying under the radar of young Hollywood night life, Aguilera has managed to jump right back into the spotlight in her customary flamboyant style.

With her platinum-blonde hair perfectly coiffured, scarlet lips slick with gloss and a flawlessly toned body, the Dirrrty girl has reinvented herself into a kinky mom – hence the nastiness that has heralded her album.

Ever since the video for the single Not Myself Tonight hit the airwaves, Lady Gaga’s “little monsters” have wasted no time in dissing Aguilera for basically turning into a Lady Gaga Mini-Me. The video concept, dance moves and costumes have been scrutinised and pored over so much that there’s no doubt that Aguilera is of the school that “if you can’t beat them, join them”.

The artwork on her CD sleeve is like an ode to Lady Gaga – the bondage material, nude shots and police caution tape all scream with Lady Gaga’s dominatrix fetish.

The uproar caused by the Aguilera camp’s shameless display has worked wonders for Aguilera.

While Gaga’s number one “little monster” Perez Hilton has been frothing at the mouth, calling Aguilera Xtina Xpiredtina, the publicity generated by this “feud” has ensured lots of column inches and sales for Bi-on-nic.

The music itself is not bad, being your standard bubblegum pop that usually marks the “return” of a big star. Think Madonna in Hard Candy.

Max’s mummy tries very hard to prove that she’s a hot, sexually liberated kinky tart who should be the fantasy of little boys and lascivious old men.

The album is full of sex, fantasies, more sex and diva chest-thumping. It’s meant to show that this wife and mother hasn’t lost her mojo and can still get down and dirty with the best of the pop tartlets.

A little less focus on her lady bits and sexual-freak persona, and more on that haunting voice, fun tunes and heartfelt ballads would have been better.

Instead, this product feels like an overchewed stick of gum and you want to eject it as quickly as possible from the CD player.
