My Perfect Proposal

Thursdays, 7.30pm

South Africa’s romantic hopefuls have answered the call and sent in their videos to be included in the first season of My Perfect Proposal, a follow-up to the hit show Our Perfect Wedding.

South Africa, I reckoned, would be getting an equally hilarious set of controversial characters as the wedding show – and also finally test if we’re ready to see women proposing to men.

But I’m afraid it doesn’t look like we’re in for any shockers in the show, which made its premiere quietly two weeks ago.

Presenters Dineo Moeketsi and Lebogang “Shugasmakx” Mothibe are tasked with helping lovers make their marriage proposals truly special, and the location-based reality show follows them over three days ahead of the big moment.

Unlike Our Perfect Wedding, though, Facebook and Twitter are not all abuzz the whole way through the episodes. People are also not talking about the show in the taxi on the way to work.

I mean, the one brother bungee jumped off Orlando Towers in Soweto and muttered a proposal to a partner who didn’t hear it – and didn’t even recognise him until later.

Shugasmakx booking a dodgy and rundown studio for a former singer to record a love song for his woman does not make for exciting TV.

The most drama on the show came when nerves got the better of Shugasmakx, who was hosting the second episode sans his co-presenter. Then the power failed.

The recording was moved to the posh Yamaha studios and Leaveil – the singer – themed his church sermon perfectly, then serenaded Genevieve and went down on his knee to propose in front of surprised friends and family.

Inexperienced presenters aside, my guess is that the show hasn’t allocated enough money or time to scout properly and find the perfect characters to get the nation talking.

But maybe it will still find its feet.
