‘My team has great quality’

ERNST Middendorp has been impressed with the quality of players he has found at Absa Premiership- side Maritzburg United.

The German joined “The Team of Choice” last Sunday after four-time league-winning coach Gordon Igesund left in a huff.

Middendorp flew from Johannesburg on Sunday morning, “had a meeting with the management and technical team for about three hours and at 3.30pm held my first training session”.

Since then, he has held two daily training sessions on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Middendorp found the club positioned 12th on the log, the same slot they finished in last year.

“I am not ready to make promises yet. It is not good to make predictions and promises before getting used to the players.
“Let me get used to them on and off the field then we can start making predictions,” he said.

The former Kaizer Chiefs mentor said he had an idea of the players as he has followed the likes of Fadlu Davids, Collins Zimba and goalkeeper Brendon Waddle on television.

“The club has good quality players,” he said.

Middendorp has a big task ahead of him as he joins the club in the middle of a shortened, tough and demanding season. The coastal side is billed to open the iconic 2010 World Cup Moses Mabhida Stadium against AmaZulu on Sunday.

Chief executive Afzal Khan said plans were afoot to move their home game against Kaizer Chiefs on Sunday, December 6, to the same new venue.

Many expect Middendorp to be the saviour the club has needed since buying the status of Tembisa Classic. After being bought by a Farouk Khadodia-led consortium, Martizburg got relegated, bounced back, finished 12th last season and have not impressed yet this season.

This has not gone down well with their supporters who have seen the club become one of the best crowd-pullers in their home games in the Absa Premiership averaging 8 500 spectators at their 12 500-seater Woodburn Stadium.
