Mystery surrounds charred remains

2011-11-03 10:59

It was not certain that the charred remains of a woman found in the boot of a burnt-out car in Cullinan, north of Pretoria, were those of a missing Metro officer, Gauteng police said today.

“[On] Wednesday (yesterday) at about 9pm, a badly burnt body of a woman was found in the boot of a white Hyundai Getz in an open veld along Zambezi Road,” Lieutenant-Colonel Tshisikhawe Ndou said in a statement.

Community members saw the car leaving the road before it exploded.

When police investigated, they found the woman’s body in the boot of the car.

Eyewitness News reported yesterday that the body was believed to be that of a missing Tshwane Metro police officer.

“There is no confirmation of that, because the body was badly burnt ... we will have to wait for the results of DNA analysis and other tests to determine the identity,” Ndou said.

A case of murder had been opened, but no arrests had been made.
