NFP councillor walks free

2013-12-04 16:44

Murder and attempted murder charges against a National Freedom Party (NFP) councillor and his son have been withdrawn by the Durban Regional Court.

Magistrate Trevor Levitt today discharged the case against NFP councillor Mgezeni “Bhungu” Gwala and his son Celimpilo “Mjabelelwa” Gwala.

The third accused, security guard Skhumbuzo Nxumalo, would still face a charge of murder. Two counts of attempted murder against him were dropped.

The three were accused of shooting dead Cebisile Shezi on October 6 2012 near the Thembalihle railway station in KwaMashu, after Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) supporters converged on the Gwala home, near the station.

Shezi was wearing an IFP T-shirt at the time.

The attempted murder charges related to the three of them firing into the crowd.

Jubilant NFP supporters erupted into song when the decision was announced.
