NGC: Zuma cracks the whip

2010-09-20 10:45

President Jacob Zuma has lashed the ruling party’s Youth League over its ill-discipline and “unacceptable” behaviour, saying the league was not autonomous and was subject to the ANC’s discipline.

In his political report to the ANC NGC in Durban today, Zuma said the ANC constitution made it clear the league was an ANC structure created by the ruling party and “subject to ANC discipline”.

“The ANC is not in alliance with its own leagues, nor are the leagues alliance partners of the ANC. They are structures of the organisation,” Zuma said to massive applause from the delegates in the conference hall.

The ANC leadership he said, would work with the ANCYL after the NGC “intensively” to ensure that “regrettable incidents”, particularly around “unacceptable” behaviour at ANCYL conferences are “dealt with”.

Zuma’s hard-hitting comments come in response to attacks on him and other ANC leaders by ANCYL president Julius Malema in recent months and were clearly aimed at putting Malema in his place.

Zuma also slammed those who used “innuendo or insinuation” to undermine other leaders and the party itself.

The ANC national executive council, he said, had banned such behaviour and any members continuing to behave this way would be summarily suspended while action was being taken against them.

The ANCYL delegates sat quiet during Zuma’s lashing of their leader, while delegates from provincial structure roared approval for Zuma’s hard-hitting comments.
