NPA given permission to freeze accounts

2010-11-05 14:43

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) today said it was granted permission to freeze 55 accounts where R3 million, stolen from a Free State municipality, was allegedly transferred to.

Money amounting to R921 475 of the R3 million embezzled from the Nketoane local municipality in Reitz, was allegedly illegally transferred to personal accounts between October 22 and 25, a statement from NPA spokesperson advocate Mthunzi Mhaga said.

Suspects Zacharia Mokonoto, Patrick Sekhula, Portia Maseko and Isaac Mabote were arrested while allegedly trying to withdraw part of the money at different Absa branches in Johannesburg and Pretoria.

Police were investigating 56 other accounts where the balance of the R3 million was transferred to.

The Preservation Order, which the NPA was granted yesterday, would prevent account holders from withdrawing money while the State proceeds with further investigations in the case and finally forfeit the money.

The four suspects appeared in the Bloemfontein Regional Court and their case was postponed for further investigation.
