NUM mineworkers to down tools

2012-03-14 13:55

The Modikwa platinum mine in Burgersfort, Limpopo, has been served with a strike notice.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said today workers would officially down tools at 6am tomorrow and would continue the strike until their pay demands were met.

Spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka said the union was demanding a 12% wage hike while the company was offering “9.5% for the A band (the lowest paid workers), 8.75% for the B band and 8.5% for the C band (highest paid workers)”.

Modikwa general manager Mandla Nxumalo declined to confirm the notice.

“We will not be commenting on that,” he said.

The mine is a joint venture between African Rainbow Minerals and Anglo Platinum.

In a statement, Seshoka said other conditions of service were also in dispute.

These included issues of the minimum wage, the living out allowance, equalisation of bonus, housing, and medical subsidies.
