NZ quake: ‘Presumptuous to say no South Africans were affected’

2011-03-01 08:48

There were still no reports of South Africans affected by the recent earthquake in New Zealand, the Department of International Relations and Co-operation said today.

“We still haven’t come across South Africans who were affected,” said spokesperson Clayson Monyela.

“Because they are still discovering bodies in the rubble, it may be presumptuous [at this stage] to say no South Africans were affected,” he said.

Monyela said the department continued to monitor the situation in Christchurch by checking and verifying information with authorities on the ground every day.

A 6.3 magnitude tremor hit New Zealand’s second largest city last Monday, killing at least 155 people.

It also damaged and destroyed thousands of homes and buildings in and around the central business district.
