»?South Africa has a high-cost, low-performance education system that does not compare favourably with education systems in similar developing economies.

We need to get communities to take ownership and pride in our schooling system. Many people who want to give back to communities can do so by going back to the schools that they’ve attended to see how they can assist.

Government also has to provide a menu of its requirements, where citizens and the private sector can help within our education system.

»?The Black Management Forum’s elective conference in October was themed Systemic Corruption: A Real Threat to Constitutional Democracy, Job Creation and Economic Stability.

Whether we like it or not, systemic corruption is persistent and difficult to combat, not only because of its inner workings, but because it is embedded in a much wider political and economic situation that helps sustain it.

Looking ahead, however, we can no longer leave issues of corruption to be tackled only by investigative journalists, the justice system, or even websites and blogs. We all have a duty to make a contribution in the fight against corruption.

This includes new ways to push for greater transparency

and accountability.

»?Something needs to be done to restore citizens’ confidence in our public institutions, such as the judicial system, police services and many more.

The best way to do this is through the respect of our Constitution, for it is founded on the values of social justice and fundamental human rights. It is a set of rules that ought to guide us and will restore the confidence in public institutions when well thought out and implemented.

»?The country’s support of the National Development Plan is vital because, through its effective implementation, we can create an economy that is

three times its current size and reduce unemployment to 6% by 2030.

This is truly possible with the focus on creating a conducive and favourable environment for small and medium enterprises.
