Nato jets bomb Tripoli, Aziziyah and Sirte

Tripoli – Nato air strikes on Tuesday hit the Libyan capital Tripoli, Sirte, Muammar Gaddafi’s home town and the town of Aziziyah, south of the capital, the official news agency JANA reported.

“Tripoli and Sirte were the targets of a raid by colonialist crusader aggressors in the early hours of Tuesday,” the agency said, without giving further details.

Shortly afterwards the agency, quoting a military source, said the raid had also targeted the Al-Hira region and the town of Aziziyah, 50km south of Tripoli.

Deputy foreign minister Khaled Kaim said NATO raids on Monday had struck at fixed and mobile telephone infrastructure in the north of the country around Sirte.

“Yesterday coalition forces bombarded telecommunications stations 50km from Sirte, and 80km to the east and 80km to the west of the town,” he told a press conference.

He said the raids were carried out “at the request of the rebels who are preparing to carry out massacres in the region”.

Early in the afternoon, AFP journalists in Tripoli reported at least one plane flying over the capital.
