Negotiations continue in Tatane family’s civil suit

2012-04-24 06:55

Negotiations with the state attorney in the civil suit by the family of Andries Tatane against Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa are continuing, the family’s lawyer has said.

The criminal trial of seven police officers accused of murdering Tatane continues today.

Tatane was killed in Meqheleng, Ficksburg, on April 13 last year during a service delivery protest.

Video footage that made international headlines showed riot police beating Tatane during the march to the offices of the Setsoto municipality.

Initially eight police officers were charged. The charges against one of the accused, Kanathasen Munsamay, were withdrawn today, Sapa reported.

The trial is expected to be heard until Thursday.

Advocate Johan Nel, legal representative for Tatane’s family, said a guilty verdict in the criminal trial could benefit the civil case.

He refused to disclose the amount claimed by Tatane’s family but said it would include maintenance for Tatane’s two children.
