Nel to Pistorius: Take responsibility for shooting Reeva. Say it

2014-04-09 11:29

“I killed Reeva Steenkamp.”

This was the admission by Oscar Pistorius shortly after Prosecutor Gerrie Nel today began a merciless line of cross-examination of the athlete.

“You were and you still are one of the most recognised faces in the world. You are a model for sportsmen, disabled and abled?” was Nel’s first sentence.

Pistorius replied: “I was but I’ve made [an] incredible mistake.”

“You made a mistake?” retorted Nel.

“You killed a person, you killed Reeva Steenkamp ... You shot and killed her, won’t you take responsibility?”

When Pistorius replied in the affirmative, Nel said: “Then say it."

“I killed Reeva," said Pistorius, his voice again cracking with emotion.

Nel’s next line of evidence dealt with a video in which Pistorius is seen firing a shotgun.

The court adjourned after a legal dispute over whether this video is admissible.

Pistorius’ lawyer, Barry Roux, has said the state may not introduce evidence during cross-examination but Nel says the video is relevant to Pistorius’ “long character evidence”.

According to the Criminal Procedure Act, a witness may only be cross-examined on character evidence if another witness or the accused testified to the accused’s good character.

Roux led Pistorius in this kind of evidence yesterday, which makes it open season on Pistorius' good character for Nel during cross-examination.
