Former Nersa chief executive Phindile Baleni has been appointed director-general in Gauteng premier David Makhura’s office.

“Baleni brings a wealth of experience in senior management leadership and in the management of complex and diverse projects,” the Gauteng government said today.

Her most recent job was as National Energy Regulator of South Africa chief executive.

“We are confident that she will provide strategic leadership to the civil service,” Makhura said.

Yesterday, the energy ministry said Baleni resigned from her position to “pursue other interests”.

The ministry and department thanked Baleni for her contribution to South Africa’s energy sector, spokesperson Zodwa Visser said.

“The energy industry has benefited greatly from her excellent mind, fine work ethic and integrity,” Visser said.

The department would soon begin recruiting a new Nersa chief executive.
