New 12km road race for Cape Town

2015-01-27 08:41

Cape Town has added a new event to its road race calendar.

The FNB Cape Town 12 One Run was launched in the Mother City last night.

The inaugural race joins the Two Oceans and Cape Town marathons among the highest paying and elite road events in the province.

One Run, which takes place on May 17, offers a total prize purse of R300 000 and is set to attract 15 000 runners. Anyone from under 19 to 70+ years can enter.

Among the star attractions will be renowned middle-long distance specialists Stephen Mokoka, Elroy Gelant, Mapaseka Makhanya and René Kalmer.

The quartet will be pushing for the R40 000 first prize purse on offer and they intend to use the 12km race to build on their speed ahead of major international events this year. This includes the IAAF World Championships in Beijing, China, in August.

Race organisers said negotiations were ongoing to bring in international runners to the inaugural Cape Town race.

Top mid-distance coach Jean Verster said One Run will bring together the athletes who normally race on the track.

“We need more short races, possibly under 12km. This race will showcase the middle-distance talent we have in the country. I expect fast times,” said Verster, the Potchefstroom-based coach whose stable boasts accomplished athletes such as Gelant, Caster Semenya, André Olivier and Nigel Amos of Botswana.

Meanwhile, entries for the One Run open on February 3 and the cut-off date is May 1.
