New ASA board announced

2010-09-18 15:39

Athletics South Africa’s new board, announced today, will concentrate on promoting the sport, administrator Ray Mali has said.

“They will promote the sport, the rest is left to me and Sascoc. I will accommodate them in a clean room,” he said shortly after the new board was announced at the Holiday Inn Garden Court in Kempton Park, east of Johannesburg.

The board consists of four athletes.

KwaZulu-Natal’s Blanche Moila was first to be elected, taking the chair of cross-country, while the province’s president Aleck Skhosana, won his place as chair of the national road running commission.

Having resigned from the interim committee, both James Evans and Geraldine Pillay were returned to the board as track and field chair and athletes’ chair, respectively.

Hendrick Ramaala and Arnaud Malherbe are additional members.

Motlatsi Keikabile, Willem Fourie and Peter Lourens are the other members of the board.

Speaking after the election, Ramaala said he was excited.

“We got the people we wanted in the board, there are four athletes,” she said.

Sascoc, which had been in control of ASA since November last year, had called for elections amid pressure by the International Association of Athletics Federations to hand the sport back to the national federation.
