New Banyana coach impressed with ‘talent’

2014-03-27 13:07

New Banyana Banyana coach Vera Pauw believes the country has a wealth of talent.

Pauw, who started her new job last week, said she was impressed with what she has been exposed to.

The Netherlands-born coach had to select her future team from the 43 players who turned out at a three-day camp at the University of Pretoria High Performance Centre last week.

Said Pauw: “There is an amazing talent here. The players are technically gifted, skilful and highly mobile. The only challenge for me is teamwork as to how they relate to each other on the field. I have also heard they are not fit enough and these are the areas we need to work on.”

Pauw, who comes with extensive international experience from her playing days and as a coach, said she was confident of succeeding in her new role.

She said she was well aware of the expectations as she has been mandated to lead the team to the 2015 Fifa Women’s World Cup in Canada.

Pauw said she had bought into the vision sold to her by Safa president Danny Jordaan.

“I once told my husband I had a feeling I would be back in this country and it has now happened. I am looking forward to the challenge of helping to transform the country’s women’s football.”

Pauw said, without undermining the Comores islands who Banyana meet in the African Women’s Championship qualifier in May, that she was already looking forward to the October tournament in Namibia.
