It’s confirmed – Vera Pauw has been appointed the new Banyana Banyana coach as City Press predicted yesterday.

Pauw takes over from Joseph Mkhonza.

The former Dutch women’s coach, who has extensive international experience, has been tasked with qualifying the South African women’s team for the 2015 Fifa Women’s World Cup in Canada.

This means she has to ensure that the team finishes in the top three of the CAF African Women’s Championship in Namibia later this year. But she must first ensure qualification as Banyana will take on the Comores in May for a place at the Namibia tournament.

SA Football Association (Safa) president Danny Jordaan said: “Her appointment was well thought out and we are confident that in her, we have a coach who can take Banyana to the next level.

“She has the right credentials and her track record speaks highly of a coach who has the desire to compete with the best in the world. That is the level we want Banyana Banyana to be. We liked her vision and desire to be successful,” said Jordaan.

Pauw has worked as the technical director of the Russian Football Union and was the country’s interim coach in 2011.
