2011-07-07 14:35

The ANC today welcomed the appointment of Mac Maharaj as President Jacob Zuma’s spokesperson.
“As a seasoned leader, negotiator, and former minister... Mac will bring a wealth of experience into his new responsibility,” the ruling party said in a statement.

Maharaj played a leading role in the negotiation processes that led to South Africa’s first democratic elections and government.

The ANC said that with his skills, knowledge, and dedication, it was certain he would execute his responsibilities with diligence and would continue to serve the people of South Africa with dedication.

The Presidency announced Maharaj’s appointment yesterday.

Maharaj is a former transport minister and veteran ANC and SA Communist Party member.
He was Zuma’s special envoy handling matters particularly in North Africa and the Middle East.

He is also a member of the Zimbabwe facilitation team and represents Zuma on the G20 infrastructure working group.

Zuma’s former spokesperson, Zizi Kodwa, was in the position on an acting basis and would continue his work as a communication adviser.
