New bomb blasts hit Nigeria

2011-11-15 14:29

Nigerian authorities today confirmed three bomb attacks on the northern Nigerian city of Maiduguri.

According to Borno state’s police commissioner, Simeon Midena, one of the attacks was aimed at a vehicle belonging to a joint police force tasked with maintaining peace and security in the city. Midena said there were no casualties.

Early reports from local media suggest the radical Islamist group Boko Haram may be behind the attack.

According to one witness, members of the group arrived on the scene carrying weapons.

“When the vehicles and their men finally appeared in the environment, the group threw explosives at them, but missed the target of the vehicle,” an anonymous witness said.

“Security operatives immediately alighted from their vehicles and engaged in several shoot-outs with the groups before dispersing them” he added.

A blast also hit the convoy of state Governor Kashim Shettima, on the road between the city and the airport.
