New deal for Transnet union on the table

A 17-day strike against Transnet could be over by the end of today

as the South African Transport and Allied Workers’ Union (Satawu) briefed

members on a new wage offer.

Satawu workers started the countrywide strike against Transnet on

May 10.

Satawu general secretary Zenzo Mahlangu said provincial union

leaders were to inform members this morning about new wage offer. The union was

hoping to have a final decision by 2pm.

Its members have been demanding a 15% increase while Transnet

offered 11%.

Its fellow union, the United Transport and Allied Trade Union

(Utatu), embarked on the strike with Satawu for a few days before deciding at

the end of last week to accept the 11% offer.

Neither Satawu nor Transnet wanted to give details of the new

offer. However, Mahlangu said: “They gave us what we wanted, just in a different
