New municipal manager for eThekwini

2011-12-09 14:30

Sibusiso Sithole, the administrator of the Msunduzi Municipality at Pietermaritzburg, has been appointed as the eThekwini Municipality’s new municipal manager.

Sithole, who previously chaired Durban’s central councils under the transitional dispensation, will take office from January 1 and replaces Dr Mike Sutcliffe, whose contract expired in June.

Sutcliffe continued in the post on a month-by-month basis while a replacement was recruited.

Sithole will be paid the handsome sum of R2.1 million in the post, which gives him control over a budget of R28.6 billion.

The process to appoint the municipal manager has been dogged by political infighting in the ruling party, which controls the city, as well as death threats to one of the applicants, ANC chief whip in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature, Dr Makhosi Khoza.

Other applicants shortlisted were Cyril Xaba, Provincial Planning Commission head, and Vuyo Mlokoti, municipal manager of the Amatole District Municipality in the Eastern Cape.
