New rules on travelling with a child here to stay – home affairs

2014-08-26 10:12

Child trafficking has become an increasing problem in Africa and the world, and it is for this reason that new requirements have been put in place when people travel across South Africa’s borders with a child, Deputy Home Affairs Minister Fatima Chohan said.

“The department of home affairs has the responsibility to act in an endeavour to curb this evil,” she said in a speech in Johannesburg today.

Chohan said people would have to get used to the provisions as they were “here to stay”.

The requirements were:

» When parents travelled with a child they had to produce an unabridged birth certificate of the child reflecting the particulars of both parents;

» In the case of one parent travelling with a child, in addition to producing an unabridged birth certificate, a consenting affidavit from the other parent had to be produced; and

» When a person travelled with a child who was not his or her biological child, they had to provide a copy of the child’s unabridged birth certificate, a consenting affidavit from the parents or legal guardian, copies of the identity documents or passports of the parents or legal guardian, and their contact details.

“These provisions form part of our international commitments to root out child trafficking,” said Chohan.
