New smart card ID ‘by year-end’

2012-07-06 11:04

Minister of Home Affairs Dr Nkosazana Dlamini- Zuma has announced that the new smart card ID meant to replace the old green ID will be in place by the end of the year.

“New applicants will get the smart card instead of the green ID book,” she said. Speaking at a business breakfast hosted by The New Age, the SABC and Transnet, the minister urged citizens to register their babies 30 days after birth as this would help the department to capture them in the population register.

Regarding the issue of foreigners, the minister said there was a need to legislate a new Refugee Act.

“When someone is coming to South Africa accused of being against the law in a state that warrants a death penalty, we cannot send that person back because the Constitutional Court will not agree if the person will face the death penalty,” she said.

She said this would mean that all the murderers of the world could come to South Africa knowing the law would protect them. Dlamini-Zuma said she would take the post of chairperson of the African Union (AU).

“The president, ANC and SADC decided to deploy me to the AU. If I get the post, I will go. The decision is not mine or theirs (ANC and SADC); it is that of the 54 states.”

An official on the Dlamini-Zuma campaign team said 40 out of the 54 countries had pledged their votes.

“We now have a critical mass behind us. Lobbying continues up to the day,” the official said.

The AU summit will be held on July 15 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
