Night of fun and fashion, but not so much extravagance

On Thursday night, major retailer Edgars hosted what it called a Night of Fashion extravagance at its recently opened store in the Rosebank Mall.

Calling the opening of stores a fashion extravagance really sets a high bar for yourself, but Edgars went there.

The word ‘extravagance’ (coupled with no explicit dress code) meant that a few of the attendees looked like they had dressed for a matric dance, while others opted for the smart casual/work look.

The people who seemed to get the dress code right for the occasion came later in the evening (after the awkward reception in front of the store moved to the second floor of the mall in front of the new Dune, TM Lewin, River Island and Lipsy stores, which the Edcon group was also launching). The finger snacks were the standard mince spring rolls, seared beef, cheese and tomato sticks, and wraps?–?so nothing particularly outstanding or extravagant.

The charming Maps Maponyane was the MC and managed to move the programme along despite the crowd that spoke (loudly) throughout the intro, the Edcon group CEO’s address and the trends presentation.

Some of those in attendance included trends analyst Dion Chang, Miss SA Rolene Strauss, Live AMP presenter and model Pearl Thusi (dressed in River Island) and actress Mbali Mlotshwa. The fun really began when the event moved to the second floor and guests had the chance to visit the new stores while getting manicures at Dune, sipping Champagne at Lipsy, nursing a whiskey at TM Lewin and riding a sugar high from the gorgeous Technicolor confectionery table at River Island.

The experience was special and almost enough to forgive Lipsy for having velour tracksuits in store again.

The runway show was nothing special as the guests had seen the clothes on their visits to each store, but the vibe was great and the ever-popular Mi Casa’s performance thereafter was a treat.

Not quite an extravaganza, but a fun and entertaining way to launch five stores?–?and in a mall nogal.
