Night of sartorial elegance

2012-02-11 11:12

Being allowed an exclusive sneak peek of a new designer clothing range amid good company and excellent food always makes for a good evening.

And that is exactly what happened when I attended the launch of the Lyle and Scott clothing brand at Arts on Main, in downtown Johannesburg on Tuesday night.
I am petrified of that dodgy part of the city, but geared up in my preppy frock I decided to give Main Street life a chance, just for one night.

And it didn’t disappoint. Celebs including model and soccer WAG Sonia Booth, TV presenters and actors Liezel van der Westhuizen, Ashley Hayden and Relebogile Mabotja, musicians Lira Molapo and Proverb as well as the fabulous Jen Su, Lerato Sengadi and Dion Chang had also made their way to the inner city.

Perhaps the kasi-style fish and chips, juicy burgers and creamy pasta had a lot to do with the jovial smiles everybody wore.
Hosted by rapper Proverb, who is now co-producing M-Net’s Idols, the formalities (mercifully) didn’t take long. And then came the clothes.

The clothing range appears to have been aimed at preppy dressers like accountants or bankers, albeit those with style. The upmarket range, in colours which didn’t scream, were very easy on the eye.

After the show, the Graeme Watkins Band took over. Nothing against them, they were just extremely loud.

The highlight of the night was spotting four of the Masina siblings – DJ Naked, his eldest brother Fortune, and their twin sisters Hlelo and Ntando. Just Ramesh was missing for the evening, which was about as close as it gets to a family gathering for them.

I left early. These bones can’t handle late nights any more.
