Nightmare at Gupta Airport

2013-05-01 09:44

The Guptas’ use of a national key point – Air Force Base Waterkloof – to fly in guests for a wedding gave Zwelinzima Vavi nightmares, put Gwede Mantashe on the warpath and Julius Malema used the opportunity to say: “We told you so”.

This is what they said:

Mantashe, who referred to the Guptas in a statement as “a family hosting some wedding at Sun City”, said those responsible for allowing private individuals to land at a national key point should explain their decision. If they could not account, they should be brought to book. “The African National Congress, driven by the concern for the safety and sovereignty of South Africa, shall never allow a situation where our ports of entry and national key points are penetrated with impunity,” Mantashe said in a statement.

In a statement, the Gupta family said permission “for aircraft, carrying foreign ministers and other dignitaries” had been obtained from the defence force.

“No aircraft is able to land anywhere in the world without obtaining prior permission,” they said. SANDF But the SANDF said it was not aware that permission had been granted to the Gupta family to use Waterkloof. “As far as I know, no permission has been granted to a private citizen to use the base. It is a military base and a national key point used by government and its guests,” said SA National Defence Force spokesperson Siphiwe Dlamini. Other views:
