Nitro-boost for local filmmakers

2011-05-14 15:18

The wildly popular District 9 seems to have given local filmmakers the shot in the arm they needed when it comes to being noticed in Hollywood.

Now a South African filmmaker has scored a coup in the casting of his upcoming movie, which could prove to be as popular as the “f****n prawn” sleeper hit.

Mukunda Michael Dewil will direct Hollywood hottie Paul Walker in his film, Vehicle 19, which is in pre-production and will be shot in Johannesburg later this year. Walker currently stars with Vin Diesel, rapper Ludacris and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in the testosterone-and-muscle-car fest Fast Five.

The film recently opened to rave reviews at cinemas around the globe.

The Hollywood Reporter described Vehicle 19 as “an indie thriller in which Walker plays an unsuspecting traveller in a foreign country who picks up the wrong rental car and becomes tangled in a web of police corruption”.

Walker is also billed as Vehicle 19’s executive producer.

Other producers are Peter Safran and Ryan Haidarian, the former head of production and development at South Africa’s National Film and Video Foundation, which is producing the action thriller.

“I’m excited to be working with Mukunda again. The South African audience will soon get a taste of our vision when we release Retribution on August 19, a thriller starring Joe Mafela,” said Haidarian, who is attending the Cannes Film Festival.

The film has already been bought for release in the UK, Germany and the Middle East.
