President Jacob Zuma has finally submitted to Parliament his response on the R246 million upgrades to his Nkandla estate.

The presidency confirmed today that Zuma had submitted his response based on Public Protector Thuli Madonsela’s report on Nkandla and that of the Special Investigative Unit (SIU).

Zuma had missed a number of deadlines to submit his response to the speaker of the National Assembly regarding the damning findings of the public protector.

In March, Madonsela released her findings into the R246 million upgrades at Zuma’s rural homestead. In the 450-page document, titled Secure in Comfort, Madonsela found that Zuma and his family had unduly benefited from the upgrades.

She ordered that Zuma pay for all nonsecurity upgrades done at his home. These include a visitors’ centre, an amphitheatre, a swimming pool, a cattle kraal, a culvert, a chicken run and extensive paving. A rough estimation done by the Mail & Guardian put Zuma’s repayment portion at around R20 million.

The public protector gave the president 14 days to submit a response to Parliament on what action he would take on Nkandla.

Zuma, who has denied unduly benefiting from Nkandla, submitted a brief response to Parliament in April in which he pointed out that the SIU was conducting its own investigations into the Nkandla upgrades.

He said he would wait for that investigation to conclude before providing a full response to Madonsela’s findings.

The presidency has posted the report on its website.
