No Free State official may help ANC with 2012 celebration: DA

2011-02-08 14:53

No Free State government official should help the ANC organise the party’s centenary celebrations in Mangaung in 2012, the Democratic Alliance said today.

“It is unacceptable that an official of the Free State department of sports, arts, culture and recreation has been appointed to assist in organising the ANC celebrations in Mangaung,” DA spokesperson Basil Alexander said.

He was reacting to reports suggesting an official had been elected to a task team responsible for the ANC’s celebrations.

Alexander said the DA would submit questions in the Free State legislature to Culture MEC Dan Kgothule on the report.

A departmental spokesperson confirmed that the official had been included in the task team.

The Volksblad newspaper reported today that the official, a cultural coordinator, would help due to his involvement in community structures.

The official’s travelling and accommodation costs would be covered by the state.

“The DA finds it unacceptable that an official of a government department will be used to organise a political party event,” Alexander said.

This was a violation of the code of conduct for civil servants.

The official’s involvement served as proof that the ANC showed no respect for state resources and had no understanding of the democratic principle of separating political parties and the state, Alexander said.?
