No ‘M-plan’– Mbalula

2010-09-22 15:18

ANC campaigns head Fikile Mbalula has denied knowledge of the so-called M-plan to install him as ANC secretary-general.

Speaking to the media at the party’s national general council (NGC) in Durban, the former ANC Youth League (ANCYL) leader also refused to confirm or deny whether he would be available if nominated by party branches to take up the ruling party’s second most powerful position.

The ANCYL is said to be campaigning for Mbalula to replace party secretary-general Gwede Mantashe under the guise of a call for a “generational mix” in ANC leadership.

“I don’t account about my availability on record to the media because it is not a branch. At the right time I’ll answer to branches,” he said.

He dismissed claims of the M-plan, saying the only such a plan he knows is the Mandela Plan – a reference to Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo’s plan to form an underground network before the former president went to jail.

Mbalula said the conference had disappointed those who had predicted that it would be rocked by debates over leadership.

“We have arrived and have not seen any of the things you have predicted,” he said.

ANC spokesperson Jackson Mthembu also denied the existence of the plan, and dismissed claims that Mbalula had attacked President Jacob Zuma during internal party discussion.
