No PSL, NFD matches on day of Mandela funeral

2013-12-07 09:36

Scheduled National First Division (NFD) fixtures will go ahead as planned despite the nation mourning the passing of former statesman Nelson Mandela.

Premier Soccer League (PSL) chairperson Irvin Khoza said the matches, including those of the Absa Premiership, will only be suspended on the day of Madiba’s funeral on December 15.

Khoza said in a statement: “All PSL and NFD matches will, between now and the day before the funeral be dedicated to our nation’s first democratic president Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. On the day of his funeral, there will be no PSL nor NFD matches played.”

There are positive signs in the NFD with the 16 clubs having played the same number of matches, which is unusual in the sponsorless league.

Four Cape Town-based sides – Milano United, Chippa United, Santos and Vasco da Gama – have set the early pace with Milano the leader of the NFD pack as the league nears the halfway mark.

Milano, who will meet Black Leopards in Polokwane today, have collected 29 points from 12 matches.
