No new premier for Northern Cape

2013-03-01 17:16

Multimillion rand investments in the mining industry and road infrastructure were among the announcements acting Northern Cape premier Grizelda Cjiekella made in her second state of the province address today.

Cjiekella was appointed acting premier after Premier Hazel Jenkins collapsed during the first minutes of her state of the province address last year.

A new premier has not been appointed despite the fact that ANC provincial spokesperson Gail Parker said in January, “by the time the legislature opens on March 1 the province would have a new premier”.

Cjiekella announced a multimillion rand investment in the mining industry, which would establish a manganese mine and plant.

R2.2 billion has been set aside for road infrastructure.

She also announced that more than R80 million would be allocated during the 2013/14 financial year to provide support to small farmers and black commercial farmers.

She confirmed that the R150 billion solar park in Upington, which has been mooted since 2010, was still on the cards.

What Cjiekella did not say

1. Cjiekella was mum on the fact that two MECs – John Block and Alvin Botes – are facing corruption charges.

2. There was no feedback on the Kimberley Mental Hospital – a project that was completed at an estimated three times the budget according to a presentation before Parliament.
