No pay, no power – City of Joburg

2011-06-10 14:22

The City of Johannesburg issued a “cut-off alert” ahead of a collection campaign to get people to pay their municipal accounts.

“All account holders must ensure that their accounts are up to date to avoid being cut off,” a statement read.

“It is important to note that any account in dispute or under investigation still requires payment of average account until [the] dispute is resolved.”

This followed a similar campaign in December and January which caused an uproar among customers who claimed they were unfairly disconnected due to billing errors.

The city eventually placed a moratorium on the cut-offs and in April said a total of 35 535 out of the 60 000 complaints lodged with the city from December 2010 had been resolved.

At the time changes to the IT system and “legacy” problems were blamed.

Kgamanyane Stanley Maphologela, deputy director for customer communications, said officials at Customer Service Centres were waiting to attend to accounts in dispute that should be resolved before the cut-off campaign.

Customers with a query can contact Joburg Connect on 011-375-5555 or email or visit their nearest Customer Service Centre.
