No separation in ET trial – NPA

2010-11-19 15:11

There would be no separation of trial for the pair accused of hacking to death right-wing leader Eugene Terre’Blanche, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said.

Chris Mahlangu (28) and his 15-year-old co-accused were due to appear for trial in the Ventersdorp Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

“For the proceedings they will appear together in the same court but in terms of the legislation they will be tried under different acts, one for the adult and one for the minor... There will be no separation of trial,” NPA spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga said.

Media houses wanting access would have to apply, Mhaga said. “As the prosecution we are ready to proceed with the matter and we hope the defence will be too.”

Mahlangu was released on R5 000 bail by the Ventersdorp Magistrates’ Court in July.

He was re-arrested last month after a North Gauteng High Court judge said the magistrate in Ventersdorp had made “incomprehensive findings” in his awarding of bail.

The judge found that Mahlangu was a flight risk.
