No solution in U23 saga yet

No solution has been found between PSL and Safa over the drawn-out club-versus-country debacle that had split SA football last week.

PSL chairperson Irvin Khoza said no date has been set as when the league and Safa would discuss the national Under-23 player call-up issue for the all-important Caf U-23 Championship in Morocco later this month.

The meeting, said Khoza, must take place before Monday (November 21), which is the day the Under-23 coach Shakes Mashaba is expecting the players in camp to prepare for the Morocco event.

The tournament will decide the three nations that will represent Africa at the Olympics in London next year.

Said Khoza at a press conference in Sandton today: “It is a serious challenge but we must find solution to this issue. We seek clarity from Safa and once that is sought, we can set the date for the joint liaison meeting.”

The same meeting could have taken place last Wednesday but Khoza said it did not take place “as we thought the issue was settled”.

Khoza could not immediately say if some fixtures will be moved given that the Championships does not fall under the Fifa calendar.

“We have contractual obligations to the (league) sponsors and there are serious implications as the Telkom Knockout semifinals are taking place next weekend.”

He said Safa has already issued call-up letters to the clubs.
